Represents: Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana, police organizations
Supports: If only we knew – Valencia recorded two times as many skipped votes as he did yes votes this session
Opposes: Limiting police overreach, like their access to facial recognition software and ability to search property without a formal warrant
Shameful Vote: Valencia received over $260,000 in donations from labor groups, including SEIU United Healthcare Workers West PAC, California State Council of Laborers PAC, and California State Council of Service Employees, during his 2022 campaign. However, when it was time to advocate for their best interests in the legislature, he wasn’t up to the job. Valencia failed to cast a vote on SB497 to create protections against retaliation for workers who report labor violations or unequal pay, or on SB616 to guarantee five days of annual sick leave for most workers in the state.
What were they thinking?: Valencia represents portions of Orange County that are vulnerable to the transfer of pollution and wildfire smoke through coastal and Santa Ana wind patterns. Despite this threat to local air quality, he failed to vote on three significant pollution bills this session – AB241 to increase public funding for electric vehicle infrastructure, SB253 to require businesses with revenue over $1 billion to report their emissions annually, and SB261 to require businesses with revenue over $500 billion to produce biennial reports of their climate-related financial risk. Taking a stand on protecting clean air over corporate profits shouldn’t be difficult.
